BitPoll was a small voting application developed as a non-representative survey among Zeit Online readers about their political standing regarding the US election of 2016.
Background
In 2016 I was selected for a fellowship of the Google News Initiative during which I had the opportunity to work 3 months inside the newsroom of German newspaper Zeit Online in Berlin.
The fellowship was my introduction to the field of data journalism, where I was able to contribute my previous experience in software development, data visualisation and interface design.
The challenge
It was November 2016 and the newsroom of Zeit Online was covering the US election. Zeit Online wanted to poll its users around the world in seven different languages, asking the question: “Who do you choose? Trump or Clinton?”
BitPoll was a fast-lane project initiated by the chief editor of Zeit Online. It was designed, coded and deployed within one single week. The application was used by more than 270.000 users worldwide.
My role
In this fast-lane project I took the role of the frontend developer. I developed the frontend of a simple web application in HTML, Vanilla Javascript and CSS. I collaborated with an external backend developer and the in-house designers of Zeit Online.
