In 2023 I built a survey app for the German organisation “Lokallabore” to collect evaluation data from their young users.

About the client

Lokallabore runs so called “Fablabs” in rural areas in eastern Germany for young people. A “Fablab” is a small workshop with digital tools like 3D printers, laser cutters, and CNC machines and offers a creative learning environment.

The challenge

The organisation needed to collect feedback from its young audience in order to gather insights about the effectiveness of their activities and report back the results to their stakeholders and financial backers.

Filling in a survey is usually not a super pleasant task, especially not for kids or teens! The challenge was to keep the young users (age 8-16) motivated to fill in the survey until the end. So we designed and built a custom app that makes answering the survey questions fun. This included humorous emojis and animations and the use of a vivid color scheme.

My role

My role was to build a web application based on a given design. As a full-stack developer I developed both the frontend and the backend of the app.

In addition I programmed a helpful data export tool for the administrators, that converted the database entries into a useful format that can be imported into a Google Sheet.

Technologies used

The app was built as a responsive web application.

The frontend was written in React.

The backend uses Firebase.

For this project I collaborated with designers Haakon Hilse (UI design) and Josua Roters (icons & emojis), as well as Valena Ammon (concept).
